Friday afternoon treats

It’s finally getting cool in Austin, Texas!  Today I was able to wear my pretty new boots (which I’ll post soon) and my hat and jacket.  Even better, it’s Friday.  While I know for most students that means getting ready to go out, but for me it means writing one of my many papers that will be due right after Thanksgiving.  How do I remedy this seemingly sad situation?

Studying made better

I’m taking 18 hours this semester (although the average student takes between 12 and 15), so I spend a lot of time studying.  Sometimes I need something to make it better.  The other day I found my favorite candy, Almond Joy, in the form of m&ms.  So cute!  They make studying that much better.

New, old books

I spent this weekend book shopping.  At the beginning of the semester, I was awarded a $300 scholarship for books and cultural events.  Unfortunately, I only made it to a single ballet this Fall.  But all the better, because that left the rest of the money for books!

While I’m sure I could have purchased a hundred books for the amount of money I had to spend, I chose instead to buy NICE copies of books, the kind I won’t want to replace someday if suddenly I have a fancy library to fill. For the time being, I am still in search of some shelf space for my new collection!

I bought all of my books from Book People or South Congress Books, that way I would have a nice collection of new and used books. Here’s my list if the pictures don’t suffice:

Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights – Charlotte Brontë
A Clockwork Orange – Burgess
A Tale of Two Cities and David Copperfield – Charles Dickens
Four Quartets – T.S. Eliot
The Sound and the Fury – Faulkner
Tess of the D’Urbervilles – Thomas Hardy
A Farewell to Arms
and The Sun Also Rises – Ernest Hemingway
Gone with the Wind – Margaret Mitchell
Speak, Memory
and Lolita – Vladimir Nabokov
Doctor Zhivago – Boris Pasternak
The Short Novels of John Steinbeck (Tortilla Fat, The Moon is Down, The Red Pony, Of Mice and Men, Cannery Row, The Pearl)
Democracy in America – Alexis de Tocqueville

If only it were colder

I am a huge fan of winter clothes.  (Well, I prefer to wear tank tops and short sleeves, but layering is just more fun.)  I can’t wait to pull out all of my winter stockings and tights!  My childhood friend Laura is an aspiring model, and her knee-highs fit perfectly with my excitement about the winter.  Although, it being Austin and all, it was 80 degrees today and I might have to wait quite a while longer before I can pull out my winter wear!

A pianist’s nail polish

Pianists, by default, cannot have nice nails.  Over the summer for the first time in my life I grew them out. Then, as soon as the fall semester started and I began taking piano classes again, I realized why I’ve never had nice nails before.  To keep them short enough to play, you really have to trim them as short as possible every week.  I’ve had people try to convince me to use a nail file, but if I did that I would be filing constantly.

I decided to combine two of the things I love, a subtle pink nail color and the music I’ve been working on this semester.

Welcome

Welcome to Classical and Modern!  In the middle of my fall semester I’m always too busy to do many of the things I love.  Instead of baking every afternoon or bargain hunting every Saturday, I figured a blog would be a wonderful way to make myself feel more connected to the things I love.

In case the blog title seems odd, I chose it because it encompasses everything I adore (of course)!  Classic movies and music is just as important to me as modern art and fashion.  I’m hoping to bridge that gap by posting what is classical AND modern or, in my opinion, timeless.

Lamp: Ikea (ORGEL Floor Lamp) $20.00

This is by far my favorite lamp in our entire apartment.  It’s the only one I have that doesn’t have one of those bulbs that emits really harsh light.  (Not to mention, the paper shade goes perfectly with everything!) Since this will be my setting for all of my posts, it seems only fitting it would come first 🙂  Enjoy!
